Roberta Baumann is the managing editor of the Waunakee Tribune. She has worked in community journalism for 26 years, 24 of those at Waunakee’s weekly newspaper and two prior to that at the Nassau Herald in Long Island, New York. Her stories and photographs have received several state awards in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation’s Better Newspaper Contest and one national award in the National Newspaper Association’s contest. A native of New York City, Roberta attended City of College of New York, earning a bachelor’s degree in English. She then pursued a master’s degree in English with an emphasis in creative writing at Iowa State University. She and her husband moved to Waunakee in 1995 after she was hired at the Waunakee Tribune as the sports editor/reporter. She became editor of the newspaper in 2006.
Community journalism is an exciting career that allows reporters to meet leaders in state and local government, attend state sports tournaments, and report on interesting events in their community. Roberta will talk about how she entered the field and grew to love it. She’ll provide examples of some of the “good news” stories she has covered, along with the tragic ones, and what it’s like to cover these.
