: Nick “Marty” Martin is a managing partner at the Ian’s Pizza locations in Madison, Wisconsin. The first Ian’s Pizza by the Slice was opened by Ian Gurfield in 2001 near the UW Campus in Madison, Wisconsin with a second location opening near the Capitol about five years later. In 2008, longtime Ian’s employee, Lexy Frautschy and his business partner Nick Martin purchased the Madison operation. Two years later, Martin bought out the shares owned by Lexy who was heading to Milwaukee to open two more Ian’s Pizza locations. Martin is also involved in other start-up food businesses including, Checo Foods, a packaged frozen burrito company and Calliope Ice Cream. As well, Martin helped launch With Gusto, a web and print design firm also offering PR services.

Nick “Marty” Martin shares the story of the iconic Madison restaurant Ian’s Pizza. What started as a pizza-by-the-slice shop near the UW campus has grown into five restaurants in three states, along with other spin-off businesses as well. As an owner of many of these companies, Martin has a wealth of experiences to share with young small business owners in the making. What does it take to start a business?
