Rene Walters grew up in Madison Wis., to parents who are both teachers. His mother teaches Spanish, Italian and French; his father, English. Rene has always had a passion to help and teach. He started school at UW-Madison as an education major and quickly transferred to nutrition. The profession of Registered Dietitian was a perfect fit, incorporating interpersonal interaction with clinical science and physiology. After graduating from UW, Rene went to Oklahoma for graduate school and upon completion worked at a private cardiac hospital. It is at Oklahoma Heart Hospital that Rene experienced firsthand the impact of nutrition in health, specifically the impact of nutrition in relation to diabetes. This prompted a professional shift to diabetes and the advanced certification of Certified Diabetes Educator. After five years in Oklahoma, Rene moved back home and commuted to St. Clare in Baraboo, WI for 3 years until moving to his current position at UW Health. Rene’s belief is you can find a job anywhere, but finding a job that gives people hope every day is not a job, it’s a gift.

Helping patients feel better can be as easy as managing what they eat. That is the role of a Registered Dietician, also called Clinical Nutritionists. Rene Walters has expanded his work in nutrition a step further by becoming a Certified Diabetes Educator. With so many people impacted by this disease, Rene says understanding the sick side of sweet is rewarding work that helps patients manage their diabetes and avoid the devastating impacts of the illness.
