Katie Werner attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she earned undergraduate degrees in computer science and applied math and a master's degree in actuarial science. She has worked at American Family Insurance for the past six years. Katie has been an actuarial analyst responsible for pricing miscellaneous vehicle and commercial products. In her newest role, she works to ensure that regional homeowners pricing strategies align with corporate and product goals. Katie also volunteers as an exam grader for the Casualty Actuarial Society Exam Committee. Outside of work, Katie is an avid figure skater and US Figure Skating Bronze level test judge. She also enjoys traveling with her husband, reading fantasy novels, yoga, and spoiling her two cats.

If you are a problem solver and enjoy math, actuarial science might be the profession for you. Actuaries draw upon a solid background of mathematics and statistics, financial economics, and even computer science to creatively solve problems, primarily for the insurance industry. As a young actuary at American Family Insurance, Katie Werner is hoping to encourage more young women into the field which typically has more men. However, for any interested individual, Katie says actuarial science provides a vibrant learning environment as well as good pay, job security and work-life balance. (Running Time 22:08)
